Battle of Local College Bands to Open Event
Polk, FL -- United Way of Central Florida will kick off its 2013 campaign season with a free, outdoor concert headlined by local band, Clemons Road. The concert will take place on Thursday, September 19, 5:30 – 9pm, in Munn Park in Downtown Lakeland.
“This event is very different for us,” said Terry Worthington, President of United Way of Central Florida. “It is one of the few events that we have hosted that is open to the public. We’re also excited to potentially bring in a younger audience for this event.”
The evening will start at 5:30pm with a battle between bands from Polk State College, Florida Southern College, and Southeastern University. Each school will be represented by one band. Concert attendees can then vote for their favorite band by texting specific keywords to donate $10 to United Way of Central Florida. For those who cannot vote through the text to give system, kiosks will be set up for credit or debit card donations. The winner of the battle of the bands will be chosen based on the amount of money raised in votes for the school in combination with the scores awarded by celebrity judges. The winner of the battle of the bands will be announced at the event.
At 7:00pm, Plant City based Clemons Road will take the stage with their blend of country and island music, pulling in influences as diverse as Sublime, Alan Jackson, Dave Matthews, Jimmy Buffet, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Zac Brown Band. Clemons Road is comprised of Cliff Brown, Eric Long, Jason Baker, Josh High, Chris Brown, and Gavin Baulac.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase at downtown restaurants and through vendors at the park. A portion of the proceeds from food sales that night will be donated back to United Way of Central Florida.
United Way of Central Florida’s 2013 campaign chair, David Robinson, has charged the community to “Be BOLD,” with the goal of raising $10 million for programs in Polk, Hardee, and Highlands counties. United Way of Central Florida funds programs in the areas of education, income, and health, the building blocks of a good quality of life. Programs are vetted by a team of more than 240 volunteers to ensure that they provide quality, needed services that show measurable results.
The concert is free and open to the public. Attendees should plan to bring lawn chairs or blankets in order to comfortably enjoy the event. In case of rain, the concert will be moved to Polk Theatre.
