The Scholastic truck arrived at United Way’s office late December bringing with it books for new Lending Libraries that will be placed throughout Polk, Highlands and Hardee counties. These portable libraries are part of an early literacy initiative established throughout the community to encourage parents to read with their children. The program is a component of United Way Success By 6. There are currently 117 libraries with each library including over 200 age-appropriate books and a system for encouraging use. These libraries would not be possible without the support of businesses and organizations such as The Early Learning Coalition, Verizon and State Farm. For more information about Lending Libraries, contact Coleen Pizzuti at 863-648-1500 ext. 248 or coleen.pizzuti@uwcf.org.
