Angela was fourteen years old and performing poorly at her school in
Highlands County. She lacked confidence and was self-conscious about her
appearance. Angela would sometimes lash out at others and use bad
language.
Fortunately, Angela started attending weekly meetings with a mentor from Big Brother Big Sisters, a United Way partner that provides professional case management and oversight for at-risk youth. Her mentor served as an older role model and friend to Angela. She received encouragement and guidance on how to handle difficult situations at her school. Mentors also receive training in methods to motivate academic success.
Angela’s self-esteem began to grow and her schoolwork improved. She developed a positive attitude, stopped cursing and is no longer at risk of dropping out of school. Angela has become a beautiful young lady who has respect for others and herself.
