Recovering Alcoholic Starts New Life at Talbot House

In June 2010, Richard was feeling hopeless when he came to Talbot House, a United Way partner. A long time drinking problem left him unemployed, homeless and depressed. Richard’s relationship with his teenage daughter also suffered as a result of his alcoholism. To make matters worse, he had recently been injured after being hit by a careless driver while walking alongside the road.

Fortunately, Richard committed to a long-term recovery by joining the Talbot House Renewal Program. He soon obtained a Food Service Manager’s license through their Job Skills Program and served as the Assistant Manager in their Lakeland kitchen.

Richard learned basic money management skills such as how to open a checking and savings account. He also earned his GED and is planning to study business management in the future.

Richard is currently working full-time on the kitchen staff at Harry’s Seafood, Bar and Grill. His daughter says she sees the positive effect the program has had on him and their relationship is growing stronger.

Even through an injury, the loss of a job, and alcoholism, Richard was able to make a U-turn toward a new life and financial independence. He credits Talbot House for renewing his health, career and spiritual life.

“Talbot House gave me what I needed to get past the emotion of what I had lost and get back to living,” said Richard.
